I am pretty much set on the idea of taking popular Japanese kawaii, or "cute" icons and putting them in an American context, but I don't know the best way to show this. Here is a website that I found which helps to introduce popular Japanese characters to the U.S.

Before I found this website, I asked some people on gaiaonline where they first discovered some of these characters.

Ideas for Final Project
1) Contemporary Japanese pop culture and design aesthetics really interest me. The "kawai," or cute culture in Japan is popular among both children and adults. I have done a lot of research on the reasons behind the Japanese' obsession with cute characters, such as Hello Kitty and Pokemon. I was thinking about showing these implicit meanings by doing a re-edit of a pokemon t.v. episode, or maybe from one of the movies. I may mix a montage of other stills in with the video, to further emphasize the modern Japanese way of life.
2) There is a website called gaiaonline that I could use to explore a form of interaction. On gaia, you can start threads where all members of gaia can make posts and give answers to poll questions if you have any. For this I may explore how these different Japanese characters become popular in the U.S. through the web.
3) I made a list of questions that I could ask people that have to do with different perfectionist/paranoid tendencies I have. I am interested in finding out if other students wonder about or do the same types of things.
ex) Do you ever get a new gift and not touch it for months because you want it to keep its newness?
Are you afraid to throw things in the trash because you imagine it going into a landfill? And instead things begin to pile up in your room/home.
